AboutThe objective of the symposium is to bring together interested parties who have an interest in the interactions of seaweed washed up on our beaches, those who have a stake in the impacts of seaweed (Sargassum) on our beaches. Invited speakers will address the scientific, economic, educational, and administrative issues of dealing with Sargassum, including removal and leaving it in place. Representatives of coastal communities and entities tasked with dealing with Sargassum will be asked to share their local solutions. The ultimate goal of the symposium is to discover new methods of successfully dealing with Sargassum in ways that positively impact Texas beaches and adjacent communities. At Sargassum Symposium 2008, demonstrations and discussions of new and old Sargassum removal technology, as well as presentations of alternative uses of ''Sargassum', including applications in the mariculture industry, use as fertilizer and as a potential source of biofuel, were a big hit with the participants. Based on the interest in the issues covered during SS'08, it has been decided to reconvene to compare notes on beach maintenance practices as they have been altered, or not, as a result of SS'08.
